The awakening of our awareness to the importance of Vitamin D is one of the biggest “medical discoveries” of my brief medical career – right up there with Ozone, Genomics, and our Microbiome.
If you got a bathing suit quality tan yesterday – back, chest, belly, thighs, arms, legs – then you don’t need Vitamin D today.
Women with low Vitamin D seem to have a 5 X increased risk of breast cancer.
Men with low D seem to double their risk of prostate cancer.
If your Vit D level is low, you may increase your risk for about 17 different cancers!
By the way, sun tan = good. Sun burn = BAD!!!
Good, tanning sun rays = between 10 am & 2 pm.
Bad, burning sun rays = before 10 a & after 2 p.
Q: So, how much Vitamin D do I need?
A: Enough to get your Vitamin D level – your 25(OH)-D {twenty-five hydroxy D} to AT LEAST over 50 ng/ml. The official range is 30 to 100 ng/ml. Risk factors drop dramatically once you get your levels over 50.
Q: So, how much D do I need???
Well, it is possible to become toxic on Vitamin D, but you either have to be negligent or very determined.
Some folks can get their D levels over 50 ng/ml by taking 2000 IU of Vit D daily. Some need to take 10,000 IU / day.
Q: 3rd time now, How much “D” DO I NEED?
It is reasonable to start at 5000 IU daily. After about 3 months, you MUST get your level checked!
You can have your doctor check the level, or, you can go to Amazon and order a kit to be sent to your home. Having just gone to Amazon, the Vitamin D test kits range in prices from just under $10.00 to $80.00.
Other afflictions that may be a result of low Vitamin D: hypertensionm, depression, obesity, fibromyalgia, dementia, diabetes, cough, cold, flu……
Bottom line, take enough Vitamin D to get your blood level over 50 ng/ml!
