Elly May DietSM

As you probably know, organic is better than non-organic.

Our next recommendation with regards to diet is to follow the Elly May DietSM.

That is NO GRAINS!  No breads biscuits, bagels, cakes crackers, cookies, pies, pizza, pasta, pancakes, waffles, granola, cereal, donuts, or oatmeal. And… no dairy!

When one eliminates all grains, you are left with… the Elly May DietSM.

  • 85% veggies/legumes
  • 5%  – fruits
  • 5% – nuts
  • 5% – dead critters (meat, fish….)

Yes, it is in our best interest to be about 95% vegetarian!

This is the Weight Loss, anti-Diabetic, anti-constipation, anti-heart attack, anti-stroke, anti-wrinkle, anti-Alzheimer’s, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritis – feel better, sleep better, think better, gut happier diet!

EXERCISE

What’s the minimum amount of exercise?  Ans: 30 CONTINUOUS minutes of walking 5 or 6 days a week.

To lose weight,. one should walk a minimum of 45 CONTINUOUS minutes 5 or 6 days a week.

2 days a week it is OK to sub in a high intensity cycle workout.  That is, 3-5 minutes warmup  –> 30 seconds

of near maximum effort followed by –>  90 seconds of cool down –> 30 seconds hard –> 90 seconds cool down.  Do 8 of these cycles, 2 days a week.

Supplements

Or – What should I take?

“In general, if you give the body what it needs to get back in balance… it will!”

  1. Clean Water – detoxify or clean it yourself!
  2. Clean Air
  3. Your vitamins!

80% of American have some deficiency of magnesium, zinc, vitamin D (determined by blood tests), vitamin C, vitamin E, essential fatty acids, and iodine (determined by skin tests), and do not get their full 5 servings of raw veggies and fruits a day!

Take these at bedtime for the number one sleep aid:

  • Magnesium (200-400 mg)
  • Zinc (15-50 mg)
  • Vitamin D (1000-5000 IU)
  • No calcium!

Did you know – 30% of heart attacks may be due to a magnesium deficiency.

Also,as magnesium is a key part of delivering calcium to your bone cells.

Your bone cells must be activated by vitamin D!

Low vitamin D and low magnesium are also THE two primary reasons for osteoporosis!

If you got or maintained a bathing suit quality tan yesterday, no need for vitamin D today.

Check your vitamin D blood level!  at least twice a year.  It may be more important than cholesterol. mammograms, or PSA!

Vitamin C

Why is it dogs, and cows and birds rarely get heart attacks, but heart attacks are common in humans?

Except for the fruit bat, the Guinea pig, a few monkeys, and humans, all other animals make their own vitamin C. We don’t.  Animals can convert food to Vitamin C – 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.  They are never Vitamin C deficient.  We humans cannot do this!

Our relative vitamin C deficiency may be responsible for most heart attacks and strokes – which animals don’t get!

Vitamin C is the ultimate fertilizer for your circulation, your immune system, and your detoxification system.

You should take it twice (or more) daily; start at 1000 mg morning and night, and increase your dose every week. Should you begin to experience stomach cramps or the “vitamin C colon cleanse KABOOM!”, decrease to just under that dose. A side benefit of regularly taking vitamin C: regular bowel movements.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil & Coconut Oil

These are the EFA’s (Essential Fatty acids), Omega Oils that taste good!  The other Omega’s really are not that tasty.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil, put a bottle out on the table – use it at every meal. Put it on anything and everything.

Do note: it is better to cook with Coconut Oil.

The Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) and Omega Oils – you name the problem and these will likely help the problem directly or indirectly (hair, nails, skin, digestion, depression, ADD/ADHD, cholesterol, arthritis, cramps, less breast cancer, smarter babies, etc!) Or rub 2 tablespoons on your skin for superficial skin circulation!

Rotate the oils and EFAs – use it, finish it, and then get a different one. Repeat this cycle. Don’t use just one of them!

Regardless, if you get 2 tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Coconut Oil per day, that’s probably enough of the “omegas” and EFAs.

Good oils to keep:

  • Primrose Oil
  • Flaxseed Oil
  • Borage Oil
  • Fish Oil (EPA + DHA = 1000mg morning & night) – Carlson’s or Eskimo-3
  • “Combo” omega

“B” Complex

The only reason(s) to take a “B” complex are to decrease your risk of heart attack, stroke, Alzheimer’s, protect your memory, nervous system/nerves, decrease your risk of colon cancer, & it may help your skin & nails!

A “B” complex =  B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, and Methylfolate (likely better than folic acid – especially if you are over 40)

Green Tea

Combine this with a little locally-made honey to help your sinuses and possible decrease your risk for cancer.

Vitamin E

1) makes your blood ‘less sticky” (like aspirin does!) 2) is an anti-oxidant 3) recycles the essential fatty acids 4) acts synergistically with Vitamin C

Take between 400  IU  two times a day to get your mixed d- alpha-tocopherols – not tocopheryls.

Glutathione

This is our cell’s ultimate antioxidant & detoxifier! But, Don’t take glutathione!  When glutathione hits the stomach, we have enzymes that destroy it.  Cysteine is one of the amino acids that makes up glutathione.  It is known as the “limiting reagent” for our body to make more glutathione. In other words, take more cysteine, make more glutathione!

Take L-cysteine for the brain and body or NAC (n-acetyl-cysteine) for the body at 600mg twice daily.

Tumeric or Curcumin

Both of these are great for reducing your risk for Alzheimers and cancer, decreasing inflammation, and improving memory.

Yes, it’s the spice in the grocery store.  When you eat, turn your food yellow!  To get your body to absorb the tumeric, make your food oily (as in extra virgin olive oil and / or coconut oil)

Iodine

Iodine can be hard to get these days as it is one of the ingredients commonly used to make methamphetamine.

Our thyroid gland needs Iodine to make the thyroid hormone – A.K.A. our body’s natural speed or speed regulator.

Of note, breast tissue also concentrates Iodine – and we’re not really certain as to why. However, a lot of women have found out they don’t have breasts diseased with fibrocysts. Rather, they have Iodine deficient breasts! If she takes Iodine, usually the cysts go away. (Heads up! An ultrasound is the best way to tell the difference between a cyst and a tumor.)

By using an Iodine solution known as Lugol’s, one can paint a two inch square patch of Iodine on hairless skin. If the patch is still visible after 24 hours, it is most likely your body does not need Iodine. Another however – the quicker the stain goes away, the more deficient you are!

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

To misquote Mr. Jagger, “It’s not a drag getting old!”

What a ride it is from, say, about 10 years old to 30!  It just keeps getting better! Then, we coast from ages 30 to 40. Next thing that happens, the hormones that began kicking in around age 13 begin kicking out around age 40. Shucks! Now, “We go runnin’ for the shelter of Mom and Daddies little helper” – HORMONES!

In the hands of those that are skilled and experienced in prescribing them, Bio-Identical Hormones make aging a whole lot more pleasant!

The epicenter of “BHRT” is the compounding pharmacy.  Balancing the hormones is a balancing act between the patient, the pharmacist, and the physician.

Below are just a few of the compounders with whom we work.  They are excellent resources of information about Bio-Identical Hormones.

Thyroid Hormone Balancing

The first trick is to recognize when and what constitutes a low thyroid or Hypothyroidism. In other words, diagnosing hypothyroidism has been and will probably remain a problem for the for seeable future.

Here’s why: As you know, the world can be divided in to “lumpers and splitters” or, to put it another way, “simplifiers and complicators”.

An elder statesman physician I knew when I was an orderly would look at the medical students and query in a deep, Virginia drawl, “Well, son, are you gonna treat the pay-shunt, or are you gonna treat the pay-puh?”

Some docs will only diagnose and treat a patient for hypothyroidism if their labs are abnormal.  They then usually adjust the dose of the thyroid hormone based on the labs.  The common prescription is big pharma’s generic thyroid hormone. (Notice how the patient feels is not a part of this equation!)

Some docs will make the hypothyroid diagnosis based on the patient’s history, physical, and their constellation of symptoms.  These docs realize the lab results don’t tell them how the patient feels, or, what the right thyroid medication is right for this patient, or, what the right dose of that thyroid medicine needs to be.

Bottom line, there’s many a way to skin a thyroid!
